ANR headset from LightSPEED Aviation
Headset evaluation :
The LightSPEED Aviation headset Thirty 3G is our choice when it comes to noise reduction and comfort.
When flying ten to twelve hours per day for several days in a row it is challenging on the pilot and on the equipment. After several different headsets used, we came to the LightSPEED G3 model, the best on the market in relation price to overall performance.
Before we had some passive headsets a Telex pro and a David Clark headset. They worked fine but they all had some draw backs. The biggest problem they offered nearly no noise reduction. Without ANR technique it was more for flying free handed and better radio communication understanding. That was OK for a long time and spending more on batteries for a trip than on fuel was no option. Today this has changed and I only can recommend electronic noise canceling technique. But watch for an Auto shut off feature. (because switching off the electronic is not on the aircraft checklist)
We fly a lot of customer Aircraft with the headset let in place. This ranges from Peltor or Flightcom to one of the best the Bose headset. They do the job, and with aircraft power supply they work fine but the comfort is often questionable. The Bose is the winner here but the price tag is out of question.
Back to the old style headsets and the lesson learned on the styling. The David Clark had Gel ear seals that one time leaked; I will not get this type of seals again. They were exchanged against Oregon soft leather ear seals but after 2 years the so called leather disintegrated completely. But the soft foam was great.
When we delivered a new plane a C182 to Thailand we shopped around and bought two LightSPEED headsets for the aircraft owner. During the long flight batteries were changed after 45h ones. (better than the product description) They were great to wear with the large foam seals even with sunglasses. The noise reduction is outstanding. Additional they had separate volume control, battery check function and auto shut off. The sound and microphone is high quality and the price is acceptable.
After this experience we got ourselves LightSPEED headsets. One other good feature is the headsets phone and voice connector. When crossing the pacific an Iridium satellite phone was used in combination with the G3 and a Disk player can be connected the same way.
